Resumen: We present the project for the next wide field energetic gamma ray observatory in the southern hemisphere, SWGO (Southern Wide-field Gamma- ray Observatory). This observatory will consist of an array of thousands of particle detectors located at an approximate altitude of 4800 m above sea level. It is designed to indirectly measure gamma rays and cosmic rays from 100 GeV to hundreds of TeV. SWGO will complement current ground-based detectors such as HAWC and LHASSO, located in the northern hemisphere. It will have a larger particle collection area and be in a location that will allow a better view of our galaxy. Among its scientific objectives is to provide information that helps understand the acceleration processes of relativistic particles in galactic and extragalactic sources, monitor transient phenomena above 100 GeV, study the variability at different time scales, and characterize the flow of cosmic rays in its range of energies, among many others. %In this presentation we will give an introduction to the observatory and its science, we will describe the site proposed by Argentina for its location and the work carried out to characterize it
